Frida Giannini made an unexpected departure from Gucci earlier this week, and many eagerly await for the next creative director of the fashion house to be appointed. Due to widespread speculation, a rep for Tom Ford has unfortunately denied rumors of a Ford comeback to the label; ”this is absolutely and completely unfounded. His own brand is growing dramatically and he views that as the next 30 years of his life,” the rep told Page Six. This is a sensitive time for Gucci as it could take the fashion house into a whole new direction; this transitional stage for Gucci can be transforming. While Ford’s campaigns were thrust into the media spotlight, brimming with controversy, famous stars and shock value, Giannini’s focus was on philanthropy and dressing real women rather than celebrities and the like. Giannini’s scope was understated elegance; it was low-key in comparison to Ford’s louder approach. But Ford specifically defined a whole new era for the fashion house during his time there from 1994 to 2004. He brought unparalleled direction and style that encapsulates what we know of as Gucci today. His departure in 2004 was reportedly due to a disagreement with CEO Domenico de Sole over creative control, yet it made room for Ford to launch his hugely successful eponymous line, Tom Ford, that same year. Ford has also expressed how big of a physical and emotional toll he had from parting with the label. Along with being recently married to his longtime partner and adopting a son, Ford still runs his billion-dollar namesake line, and it seems that a return to Gucci is just our wishful thinking.
