Mario “Yoey” Martin of myhellofalife recently got a opportunity to ask a few questions with Louisiana fashion designer and entrepreneur. Alex Malay brand is best describe by the owner with these words “Alex Malay is chic southern style with a modern twist incorporating trendy flare with classic pieces that pop.” Check out below our quick Q&A on what keeps this entrepreneur aspiring for the top!

Yoey: When did your passion for fashion begin?

AlexMalay: My passion for fashion begin as a young child. Ever since I can remember, I was a lover of all things beautiful and always had a sense of style. I was the one who stood out in front of the crowd, whether at church or a birthday party or any event. Although very young, I always loved various vintage styles, sequins, and feathers. I loved black and white Hollywood classics of flashy fashions and striking styles.

Yoey: When did you create Alex Malay?

AlexMalay:  Alex Malay came about 5 years ago when I felt restricted working a 9-5. I knew that I was born and made to be an entrepreneur! Alex Malay came about as the result of the dissatisfaction of a regular 9-to-5 job. Daily I felt frustrated, restricted, shut down, almost imprisoned—and couldn’t be free to express who I was authentically, creatively not to mention fashionably. My desire was to show case my gifts to the world.

Yoey: What’s the meaning behind the name Alex Malay as a fashion brand?

AlexMalay: The Alex Malay name has great significance, as my mother’s family last name is Alexis. Alex was taken from Alexis and my husband’s last name is Malay. I combined the two names and made it a family name Alex Malay, that’s why the name is so important to me. Family is everything.

Yoey: Choosing to run your business in your home town of New Iberia, La as oppose to maybe moving to places like Los Angeles, NYC or Atlanta why was staying home the option you chose?

AlexMalay: Choosing my fist location. My flagship store was easy for me because Los Angeles and New York the market is already over saturated with young fashion designers and entrepreneurs doing what I’m doing. So. BY me opening my first location in my hometown I’m the big fish in the sea. No one is providing a product and unique fashion designs like Alex Malay. When people walk in the boutique they are surprised they don’t feel like they are in A small town like New Iberia! Alex Malay is bringing high fashion California/New York to New Iberia!

Yoey: Is there any challenges or benefits to having your brand in a smaller market?

AlexMalay: It’s a big Benefit  for me having my brand in a small town like New Iberia, La because I have no competition. I’m the big fish in the sea. No other store is providing unique high in fashion like we are. A small town people tend to follow the tend. Alex Malay we set the trend and people want to be apart of that.

Yoey: What is the hardest part of being a entrepreneur for you? And what do you do to overcome any challenges?

AlexMalay: The hardest part of being an entrepreneur is finding balance with work life and home life. Sometimes my work consume me and I don’t know when to turn it off. I’m so obsessed with Alex Malay and I have high standards. I like to work on a level of excellence so I’m very hard on my self. So celebrating little success and finding balance is such a challenge for me building my brand.

Yoey: Recently you have expanded your brand to having a makeup line can you elaborate on that a little bit?

AlexMalay: Alex Malay is branching out and branding with Exclusive products you can only get at Alex Malay or selective retail locations we partner with to carry our brand. I have decided to branch out globally with our intimate Candle Collection and makeup line because Beauty is apart of Alex Malay. We are a lover of all things beautiful so it was only right to start my makeup line.

When you look good you feel good. Also there are women with different styles but still love the brand so I wanted every woman all over the world to have something Alex Malay to get that ultimate experience and make up was it!

Yoey: What’s in the near future for Alex Malay where do you see your brand at 5 years from now?

AlexMalay: In the near future, I see myself and team traveling all over the world expanding Alex Malay as a movement, extending our reach and inspiring women to be their own kind of beautiful. In addition, open up several brick and mortar locations, offer style and beauty classes, and host seminars and events.
