Like millions of others during COVID, candle-making and wax-based products became a new business endeavor to pursue. Jameshia Laurant and Grachelle Brewer run Phunky Scents, an organic candle and wax company. Focused on the environment consciousness, the New Orleans pair has really put emphasis on not using toxins and dye like most competitors. The company even incentivizes returning customers for recycling.

“I was stuck at home during the pandemic and couldn’t go out to my favorite store to buy the candles that I like. So I decided to make them!” Laurant said. She continued by adding, “I started doing my research and fell in love with the craft right away. I knew what I wanted to recreate and with trial and error, I was able to produce a variety of great smelling, clean burning candles.”

The mother-daughter duo, is also building a pipeline of generational wealth with Phunky Scents. When Brewer, the matriarch joined as the co-proprietor, she added infrastructure and operational logistics to the company.

Brewer elaborated by adding:

It only made sense that my daughter and I do this together. We can ensure that profits and the Brand’s integrity stay within the family. My daughter now has something tangible to hand down to her very own legacy and the Phunky Scents name can continue for another generation.

Phunky Scents candles and wax products can be purchased from many of the major pop-ups across the city of New Orleans, or ordered from their official website .
